Nowhere Line: Voices from Manus Island from Lukas Schrank on Vimeo.
An animated short film, narrated by two asylum-seeking men detained in Australia’s Manus Island Offshore Processing Centre, recounting the dangerous journeys that brought them to the island and their memories of the riot that erupted in 2014.
—————————————-
In July 2013, the Australian Government introduced a controversial immigration policy, transferring asylum seekers arriving by boat to remote offshore detention centres on foreign Pacific islands. Seven months later, the Manus Island centre erupted in violence when police and guards put down protests with sticks, machetes and guns, and 23 year-old asylum seeker Reza Barati was killed.
We spoke to Behrouz and Omar, who are currently detained on Manus Island. This film contains recordings of these conversations.

For a YouTube channel with a more cinematic flourish, head over to the Brothers Riedell. Chris and Nick are jack(s)-of-all-trades, acting, writing and directing a lot of their videos. They also made the leap into the real film world this year, directing Camp Takota, a coming of age film starring YouTube sensations Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart and Mamrie Hart.

Traces from Emily Sheskin on Vimeo.
Is our DNA the government’s business?
The very things that we discard everyday and never think twice about-hair, skin, and saliva-can be clues about who we are. They can also as well as liabilities.
Traces focuses on the work of artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg, who created Stranger Visions, a series of masks based on DNA samples extracted from trash discarded in public places, and Invisible, a spray that erases and obfuscates DNA. Through her art, she raises questions around DNA privacy that parallel the very questions we are asking about who has access to our personal data.
These questions are not theoretical. Recently Black Lives Matter activist Deray was arrested during a protest and his DNA was sent to the FBI. Should this be acceptable? What regulations do we have around DNA collection?
